Started in 1978 as a division of Kotter Company, Kotter Dock was established to provide a cost-effective way for businesses to unload and transport materials in our area. Karl Kotter and his son Rick saw a demand early-on for a barge unloading terminal in Metropolis, due to the strategic location on the Ohio River. Under their leadership, Kotter Dock has had continuous growth over the past 30 years attributable to our competitive pricing, efficiency, low overhead, and most importantly, our dedicated employees. After Karl Kotter's passing in December 2003, Rick took on the responsibility of sole owner. The foundation put in place by Mr. Kotter remains strong, and we are proud to carry on the legacy and continue to reach new levels of growth and expansion each year. Rick Kotter's success in the industry is due to his love of being part of a business that saves other businesses money and allows them to operate more economically: "Shipping by barge is by far the most economical and has the least environmental impact of any mode of transporting goods. It provides an average savings of $10.67 per ton over the cost of shipping by alternative modes, which translates into over $7 billion annually in transportation savings to the United States economy. If we can help businesses move their products at a lower cost, they've made more money and can put more people to work and operate more efficiently", says Kotter. The strong relationships we have built in the industry and our proven track record of saving companies money are what set us apart from the competition. By operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner, we aim to continue growing and creating value for all our customers for years to come.
